Strengths / Features:

When looking at the Etitancoil the first that you will notice is its heavy duty construction. The machine is made almost entirely of metal and weighs more than fifty pounds. The heavy duty metal case and punching table make this machine both strong and durable. In fact, the heavy duty construction and powerful motor in this machine allows users to punch up to twenty-five sheets of paper at a time. This is important if you plan on using your binding machine a lot within your organization.
One thing that is notable about the E Titan Coil is that it has full disengageable punching dies. When you look at the machine from the front you will notice 46 metal pull pins right above the punching throat. These pull pins allow you to stop any one of the holes on this machine from punching. This is an extremely useful feature for organizations that need to bind custom length books that are either longer or shorter than eleven inches. In fact, the disengageable dies make it possible to bind small booklets and documents that are up to twenty one inches in length.

The E-TitanCoil also has an adjustable depth of punch margin control. This small blue lever on the left side of the machine allows you to move the holes closer to the edge of your book for binding small documents and further from the edge to add strength to your thick books.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

Although the ETitanCoil has a built in electric coil inserter, I found the coil inserter on this machine harder to operate than some of the other coil inserters that I have used. The roller is inconveniently mounted on the top of the machine. This means that you need to lift the pages of your document up to the roller. The roller is also only half the length of the machine (about six inches). Many other coil binding machines include a full length coil to help improve traction and improve inserting. The coil inserter still works, it is just more difficult to use than the coil inserters that are included on the Akiles CoilMac binding machines.
Although the machine is extremely well built and utilizes heavy duty metal components, the foot pedal is not nearly as durable. The pedal is fairly small and is not as strong as the foot pedals on other similar pieces of binding equipment. Over time as users step on this pedal hundreds and thousands of times, the foot pedal may wear out or break.
The only other potential limitation that I noticed with this machine is that the chip tray seems a little bit small for a system of this size. This simply means that you will need to empty the tray more often in order to ensure that the chips don’t back up into the punching mechanism. This isn’t a huge deal. Just something to keep in mind.

Recommendation:

The E-TitanCoil is an extremely well built and durable binding machine that is designed for medium to large sized organizations that need to bind documents using 4:1 pitch coil.
It is one of the only machines on the market with fully disengageable pins. This makes it a great choice for binding documents that are printed on non standard sheet sizes.
However, for users that primarily bind letter sized sheets the placement and design of the coil inserter as well as the durability of the foot pedal make this machine a close runner up in quality to the Akiles CoilMac EPI.

Strengths / Features:

The GBC C210e is an electric comb binding machine that is capable of punching up to 20 sheets of 20lb paper per lift. That is 25% greater capacity than the smaller C110e. Plus, all you need to do is put the pages into the machine and press the button. Punching doesn’t get much easier than that.
The CombBind C210e includes GBC’s new Guide Right punching technology. On this machine, that simply means that the feed-tray slides back and forth helping you to quickly and easily center your documents for punching. The guide right technology is designed to work with both letter sized sheets and oversize covers.
This machine includes a heavy duty metal plastic comb opener that is capable of finishing documents that are up to 425 sheets thick. You can use plastic comb binding spines that are as small as 1/4″ and as large as 2″ in diameter with the C210e. The comb opener is operated using a small easy to grip handle that is located on the side of the machine.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

The C210e is ideal for organizations that only need to bind letter sized documents. The guide right technology makes punching letter size and oversize documents simple. However, for organizations that need to bind landscape documents, half letter sized sheets or A4 paper, the C210e will not work. The layout of the guide right punching technology and lack of disengageable dies prevents this machine from being used with custom sheet sizes.
The C210e does not have an adjustable depth of punch margin control. Plastic comb binding machines use margin controls to allow users to adjust the distance of the holes from the edge of the paper. For small sized books the holes should be closer to the edge of the paper so that the pages turn freely. For larger sized books, the holes should be further from the edge to provide added strength and to prevent pages from tearing out of the document.
Although the C210e is capable of punching up to 20 sheets of 20lb bond paper at a time, it should only be used to punch up to 2 clear covers or plastic covers at a time. Punching more than 2 clear covers at a time using this machine can cause your punching dies to become dull or can ruin the punching motor inside the machine.
Although some users prefer the punching button on the c210e, it would be nice if this machine included a foot pedal punch activation switch. A foot pedal would allow users to hold your document with both hands during the punching process helping you to improve binding productivity.
For inexperienced users, the GuideRight technology on the C210e is helpful for making sure that the sheets are aligned properly in the punch. However, this technology is relatively new and unproven. It is most likely going to be fine for moderate usage. However, the sliding document tray may break if this machine is used heavily. Additionally, experienced users will most likely be able to punch documents faster on a machine that doesn’t have the guideright tray.

Recommendation:

The C210e is ideal for small and medium sized companies that are looking for a medium duty electric comb binding machine.
With the ability to bind documents up to 425 sheets and punch up to 20 sheets per lift, the C210e is a great machine for an office that binds up to 100 documents per week.
However, larger users or or organizations that need to bind custom sized documents should consider a heavier duty binding punch with disengageable dies and heavier duty construction.

The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), a haven of phenomenal concepts and production vehicles, sparkled brightly like no other automotive event. The show is known for its ability to satisfy the cravings of car aficionados in every respect. Lately, it has offered a remarkable feast of automotive technology. And among the vehicles introduced, the electrifying appeal of the Chevrolet Volt seemed to steal the show.

Bob Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, showed off the Chevrolet Volt concept car – the so-called series hybrid. The batteries in the car do all the work in giving power and the gasoline engine is merely used to recharge them. The day was cloudy however and despite the weather, some 7,000 journalists came to witness the latest revelations in the auto industry.

The bountiful feast of automobiles includes Audi, BMW, and Volkswagen’s remarkable lineup. Mercedes-Benz also flaunted its Bluetec system that reduces harmful diesel engine emissions. By next year, the automakers will be offering “50-state” diesels that meet the stringent limits of states including California.

But according to critics and enthusiasts, the best meal was the Chevrolet Volt. GM announced its plan to build cars that accept a new kind of hybrid electric drive. These cars are expected to be released in 2010. To offer a sneak peek of what is to come, GM pulled the cover of Volt concept car, the first serial hybrid concept from the automaker.

Volt’s engine has no connection to the wheels. Instead, it turns a generator that charges batteries, the batteries power a motor, and the motor drives the car. According to the automaker, the car is engineered to go about 64 kilometers on a single charge and it is enough to cover many drivers’ daily requirements without ever engaging the tiny 1.0-liter engine to be in use. This engine’s only purpose is to serve as what GM calls a “range extender.” Usually, the car would recharge on wall current hence the term “plug-in hybrid.”

The 64-km range of the cars made it distinct from other hybrids. The latter runs mainly on gasoline or with a considerable help from electricity. Moreover, they are only capable of running on pure electric power in a matter of minutes. This is because they rely on nickel-metal hydride batteries. They are designed for high peak power rather than for utmost energy storage. The Chevrolet Volt, on the other hand, is engineered for lithium-ion batteries which are those batteries used in laptops.

To make the car commercially available, GM needs automotive-strength lithium-ion batteries. Various companies are working on the design and are testing them. Laptops and mobile phones do not have to survive 64-km side impacts or work in temperatures from 30 °C to 249 °C (–22 °F to 480 °F) or during heavy dust storms. Worst, batteries for the Chevrolet Volt have to last 10 years.

GM earlier reported its agreement with 2 battery groups to make the concept a viable commercial car. It has also announced its plan to design small cars starting around 2010 to deliver the drivetrain architecture of Volt.

The Ford Motor Corp. has also unveiled a serial concept called the Airstream at the Detroit auto show. The difference lies on the Ballard hydrogen fuel cell instead of an engine and a generator as a range extender. The car features asymmetric windows and an entire body side that lifts up. One striking feature of the concept car is the modern lava lamp with soothing flame images on the circular LCD.

Volvo, Ford’s safety marquee, is boosting its reputation with the introduction of the Volvo XC60, a small sport utility vehicle that features an anti-collision system called CitySense. The latter is scheduled to be offered within a couple of years. CitySense uses optical radar to monitor the speed of the car in front of it. It will use “pretension” Volvo brakes to prevent impacts at speeds up to 30 kilometer per hour.

The E-Titan Coil makes it very easy to know what size of coil you will need to use to complete your project. All you need to do is put your document underneath the blue lever that is located on the left side of the machine and push it down. The guide measures the document and lets you know what size coil you will need. Again, this is a very handy feature for those who intend to bind documents of varying sizes.

Weaknesses:

Though the E-Titan Coil punches like a champion, we thought the electric coil inserter could have been designed a little better, as we found it not the easiest to use. We don’t know why they decided to mount the roller on top of the machine, as this means you will need to lift the booklet up in order to insert the spiral coil. Also, the roller is only about six inches long (about half the length of the machine), which means you will not get the kind of traction that you might with some other machines, and the inserting process is more painstaking. Don’t get us wrong, it works fine, it is just that there are some more user-friendly systems out there. We thought that the foot pedal was on the small side, and not nearly as well-constructed as the rest of the machine, meaning that there is a chance that it won’t enjoy the longevity that the binding machine seems built for. Another small complaint, as it were, is that the chip tray seems undersized. All this means is that you will have to empty it often, and is certainly not a make or break aspect of the E-Titan Coil. Out of all the binding machine manufacturers on the market, DFG is one of the most difficult to work with when it comes to warranty. Thankfull, most of their machines do not break. However, this is definitely something to consider when making your purchasing decision.

An electric comb binding machine is a great choice if you like the look of comb binding but want to make the process a little bit easier. One of the better electric devices available is the GBC CombBind C110e. It’s an entry-level binder that’s great for offices that want to bind a few documents a couple of times per week. Here’s a list of this product’s strengths and weaknesses….

Strengths:

The C110e has a pretty good binding capacity of 300 sheets. This should be a good enough capacity for a lot of potential users.
This product can also punch 15 sheets at once. You can do it simply by pressing the button located on the left side of the machine after you’ve inserted your paper into the device. Since there’s no handle that’s located on either side of the device, the chances of developing or aggravating a repetitive motion condition (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome) are slim.
You can use both plastic combs and GBC ZipBind spines with the C110e. It has a storage tray for your supplies.
Vital parts of this machine are made from metal, including the comb opener. This is fantastic because a comb opener with plastic parts (especially the teeth) would be rendered useless after a period of time.
The machine has a comb selector guide to make selecting the right supplies for your books a little easier.
Both plastic and oversized covers can be used with this device. There is an adjustable edge guide that makes working with oversized covers both possible and easy.
The C110e has a nice, contemporary design that should be appealing to a lot of people. It’s also pretty lightweight so you won’t struggle when moving it. (The product weighs in at 24 pounds.)
This is a very affordable product and it comes with a limited one-year warranty you can use if problems arise.
Weaknesses:

Although the 300-sheet punching capacity is good for an entry-level comb binding machine, this does mean that the device isn’t ideal for organizations that routinely produce longer documents. Not only can it not punch a super long document, it wouldn’t be able to stand up to heavy, frequent use.
Like some of the other GBC comb binding machines, the C110e doesn’t do well if you try to punch plastic covers with it. If you decide to do so, make sure you don’t punch more than 2 per lift. Trying to punch anymore will cause problems, potentially even damaging the motor.
This machine lacks disengageable dies, so you will mainly be stuck with creating documents that are 8.5″ x 11″. Trying to create books that are larger or smaller than that will be tricky and may not be possible at all unless you get creative.
There is also no adjustable depth of punch margin control so you won’t be able to dictate where your paper is punched.

While the C110e lacks a lot of the features most often found in higher-end devices, it nonetheless is a reasonably priced product that would be great for offices needing an electric comb binding machine for occasional use. It’s entry-level for sure, but it works well, and it’s a great value, so get one for your office today.
